Viaduct Events Centre Update

This project involved the replacement of the existing 6-pipe sea water cooled heat recovery plant at the Viaduct Events Centre, 161 Halsey St, Auckland. The building is owned by Auckland Council and managed by Regional Facilities Auckland.

This unique building, with architectural features of a wavy roof form of barrel rolls, showcased the Cooke Industries AIRPAK air handling units installed at a 45° axial angle to the floor, as well as other Cooke supplied equipment; heat pump chillers, buffer tanks, expansion tanks, air diffusers, and sound attenuators.

The 6-pipe multi-functional heat recovery plant, originally supplied by Cooke Industries in the 2010 construction of this waterfront multi-purpose events centre, was able to produce heating and cooling water both simultaneously and independently and featured an outstanding global COP of 9.8. However on-going maintenance of the sea water leg was proving problematic, with excessive marine growth necessitating frequent cleaning regimes of the sea water heat exchanger and associated strainers and pipework.

Jacksons Engineering were tasked to solve this problem, and the latest project, completed in 2022 by Engie Services, was to disable the heat pump function and fit the heat rejection pipework to a new adiabatic dry cooler complete with attenuator. Cooke Industries worked with Jacksons on the drycooler design, and a Thermokey and NAP attenuator package was selected for the conversion.

The system is now commissioned and running well.
